Default Crazy uneven rear brake wear

I’ve been driving recently and have been hearing a grinding ish noise coming from my rear wheels. At first I thought it was a wheel bearing but it only makes the noise after driving 15+ minutes. Also I noticed some scoring on the front of my rear rotors. I took the rotors off and the backside / brake pad have some crazy uneven wear. What could be causing this? Everything seemed to be functioning fine. Wheels are not overly hot from day a stuck piston caliper. I only drive the car a couple thousand miles a year so these pads maybe have 5k miles on them. Thoughts?

Is the brake caliper piston sticking?

I don’t think so, after driving one wheel isn’t significantly hotter than the other. Not sure how else to check that.

Spec ops!

Your caliper piston is not timed correctly.

That wear indicates that the button on the brake pad is not engaged in one of the four cross points.

hey bill!

yes, that’s kinda what I thought it could be after doing a little research. I removed both calipers and made sure, as I slide them back on, the button was in one of the 4 guides. Once it’s on, you can’t see if it’s still lined up though - anyway to check it once it’s installed?

I thought with the wheels off, have someone press the brakes hard and maybe I could see if the caliper is torquing indicating it’s still not lined up? The helms manual doesn’t really say much about this.

Are these stock diameter rotors? Or did you get one of those kits that use larger diameter rotor, and bracket to space caliper out correct distance?

I had exact same wear pattern on another platform. Infiniti G37xS. I had installed the bbk that is stock on G37S. Multiple piston calipers, larger diameter rotors. So now my rotors are larger than backing plate. So I had to bend backing plate out for clearance.

But at some point something bent one part of backing plate so it was lightly contacting rotor. So heard a slight squeal, and realized what it was. But had to get to work, didn't think it'd be an issue to fix later.

So I get home, bend backing plate back, make sure its not gonna be a problem this time. Note a very slight mark on rotor. Figured it'd get worn flat soon enough and pads would just conform after a bit.

This was also rear brakes.

So then I had to replace rear subframe (control arm mounts literally rusted to dust, winter beater). Take off rotors, surprised to see exact same stepped wear, and half rotor surface rusted, just like yours.

Even though initial rotor damage seemed minor, this pattern developed.

So did you fit larger rotors, and did backing plate or anything rub for any time?
