Default Creaking/sqeeking sound from the rear?

For the past couple of days my car has been making a funny creaking/sqeeking sound whenever I am driving forward. It sounds like a sqeeky shock, but I have not gone over anything to blow a shock. The only thing bad that has happened was I misshifted and hit the redline (I know, stupid mistake, no need to flame). So any ideas on the problem? Diff? Tranny?

When you say "when driving forward", do you mean when under acceleration (brisk or gentle), under "coasting" conditions or under decel, under braking? At low speed, at high speed? Does it make the noise when you go over a bump? Mild pothole? Have you tried driving a full lock figure "8" - does it make the noise then and more so in one direction than the other? Is the noise from the front, back, right, left, in the middle?
Sounds are really hard to diagnose. Perhaps answers to these question will help to narrow it down (or not).

thanks Dave....I'll give the above a shot tomarrow and give you a little more data to work with. BTW, ever think of writting a do it yourself compression test....I really need one. I wanted to have the dealer do it, but they were being A-holes about it. Just wanted to make sure I didn't screw anything up after the misshift.

This may sound simple, but you may want check to see that all of your Shock tower nuts are tight.
