Does a 2006+ have a data recorder?

Default Does a 2006+ have a data recorder?

Hey everyone, I've tried searching for this, but only came up with results for 00-04. I was wondering if an 06+ have a "black box" type data recorder because I'm getting misfire codes and took it to the dealer after trying plugs/coils. I got a call saying they need to adjust my valves (even though the dealer adjusted them 5k miles ago) and that it would come at a cost to me. He also mentioned that the "data" was cleared and maybe an over rev occurred. I never over revved my car and don't need them accusing me of doing it and saying I cleared the data. All I've done was reset/relearn the ECU to clear the CEL I was getting while diagnosing my coil packs.

So does my car have this data recorder device in it, and would it clear all the data from a simple ECU reset?

Nope, if the coeds were cleared then you wont see anything. You need to read the code when the light comes on. Is the car mis firing? If so try moving the injectors around and see if the miss moves

I read the codes. Random misfire on #1 & #2. I want to know if it records RPM as well cause I think they're gonna try and accuse me of over revving. I cleared the codes to see if the misfire moved when I moved the coils around.

i know the 06+ civics will record over revs and keep it stored forever. No codes get thrown, it just records the highest rpm the motor has seen. id assume the s2k is the same way.

when the car throws a code it records freeze frame data surrounding engine conditions when the CEL went off. But I am pretty sure the data is lost once the code is cleared. If they would have found the data they would have told you by now as they don't miss a chance to point fingers. You should be safe in that regard, if they adjusted the valves 5k ago make sure they do any new adjustment for free. That is crap.

There is a rev limiter, so you can't over-rev it (unless by downshifting into too low a gear). Are they accusing you of over-revving during acceleration/up shifting?

I got the car back. They said the MAP sensor voltage was out of whack and that a few valves were too tight. I guess they were over-tightened when they were adjusted 5k ago. The dealership fixed it for free. I'm sure they would've been ready to say I mechanically over-revved it had they got the chance to. She's running beautifully again />

Happy ending

Though PureFunction and JFUSION's have me still wondering about the recording of data these cars have.

Everything they said is true, and then some. Most all cars now record things like over revs (and flash counts) in a way that you can't erase it. The dealers also don't generally have access to that info. They can get it, but not every service dept can do it at any time they want to. Usually a regional rep visits for that kind of crap.

Don't worry about it too much.
