I don't even use 6th gear, and if I ever do I go to 5th then to 4th. This move seems to cause more bad than any 2 seconds you save by skipping 5th.

What's funny is that when I shifted into 2nd gear at 75, I broke my axles.. I have no idea how that happened, but had the CV joints replaced because it started shaking a lot afterwards.

You look for the top of the valve stems appearing to sink down into the retainer. There are numerous topics in this forum with pictures.

there is no need to do anything else besides taking off the valve cover and inspecting the retainers?

Keep in mind this pic is from an AP1. The AP2 retainers are different, and may not show the exact same difference as the AP1. I stand on my opinion that cracking an AP2 retainer AND showing no symptoms is near impossible. At the speed it would take, the exhaust valves would hit the pistons first.

Good retainer on left.............................................. ..Broken retainer on right.

I agree, Bill's opinion is one of the ones I don't question. Bill, you said the AP2 retainers would look different in your above post, do you have any clue what you would even look for in checking if the retainer is bad?

Also, Davizzle and all else concerned with over-revs, you really might want to consider getting the shfit beeper from modifry. One of its function is highest engine RPM playback . . . it really clarifies these "I think I might have hit xxxx RPM."

Middle part = top of the valve stem, and yes.
