Default MAINT REQ'D light

Just got a 02 S2000 with 15000 miles (no warranty unfortunately). When I first got it the MAINT REQ'D light would flash a couple of times when you first started the car. Now it's on all the time solid. What does it mean. I don't have a manual but I seem to remember that the temporary flashing after you start the car meant you needed an oil change but it was on some kind of timer that came on every x miles so it didnt' really monitor if you actually needed an oil change. There was some way to turn it off if I remember correctly. My fine, it's new and clean. What does it mean now that it's on all the time solid? How do I turn it off? Thanks.
