Stock springs and valves are fine, upgrade to AP2 retainers, unless you are going FI or new cams. Stock HG is good also unless going to FI and lowering compression. What are you trying to get out of doing the "upgrade"?

Just do an adjustment and switch to AP2 retainers.

Well i have all the misfire codes and my car is running like crap at low rpms...i have definitely lost power. i have basically done just about everything that there is on the misfire thread. Now i believe i have a cracked retainer or sumtin......and i decided that i am going to do a valve job. While i am at it i want to change my valves, springs, retainers and head gasket.

and im trying to see if aftermarket valvetrain will benefit me as far as to make my car a bit more fun to drive as it is my daily driver. Ive been looking at valves, valve springs and retainers from Brian Crower and Skunk2. Is it best to go this route, or stick with oem ap2 stuff. I dont plan to go forced induction anytime soon, but im not looking at aftermarket camshafts or cams either...dont have the cash yet....any help would be appreciated!!

With it being your daily driver, I'd stick to OEM. If you were doing an NA build and wanted to squeeze every last HP out, maybe aftermarket would be okay, but I'd value reliability and longevity over maximum performance. Besides, the OEM equipment is damn good. Honda didn't really cut a lot of corners when they made the S2000.

Best advice you will get.

Stay away from the aftermarket stuff. It will not go the distance like OEM.

I'd get a proper diagnosis before you get into unnecessary engine work.
