Default New eps torque sensor install questions

What’s up everyone,

My AP1 was having a ton of steering issues that no alignment or different tire setup could fix. Figured out it was the torque sensor so I pulled the old one out of my car and ordered a new AP2 one.

I’ve read just about all the threads on here including the ones on how to clean and regrease the old one. Can’t find any instructions on installing a new one though in regards to what type of grease and where to grease it. The new one doesn’t appear to have any grease on it. What have people done? If I have to grease it, is the Honda urea grease sufficient? The old one seemed to have the green Honda urea grease all over it but can’t be sure that’s exactly what it was.

also, do I have to remove the security screws and grease the potentiometer inside like the threads say to do to the old one before reinstalling?

does anyone happen to have a video link or instruction form for reinstalling a new one?

Appreciate any help!

If you ordered a brand new one, put ample grease on the splines that go into the steering rack, and a thin layer of grease on the seal of the plastic housing. The dust shield does not need grease. A brand new unit will have fresh grease internally, and doesn't need any.

On a used unit, it's a good idea to remove the tamper proof screws on the housing and then clean the old grease out, and then put fresh grease on the upper bearing, lower bearing, and inside the plastic slip ring housing. Absolutely NO grease should be on the metal ring on the outside of the plastic slip ring housing. The unit reads the displacement of that metal ring, and in order for the unit to work properly the plastic slip ring needs to move smoothly and return to its default position on its own, with no binding or slop.

The slip ring only moves a few millimeters at most, so any unwanted slop or binding will cause steering issues.

As far as the type of grease, urea grease is good because it's a sealed unit and urea grease lasts a really long time.

Personally I've had good experience with Mobil 1 synthetic grease on the units I've cleaned and regreased. The service manual says to use standard chassis grease on the seal of the unit once a year. I wonder how many issues would be avoided if people listened to the service manual. How many people with issues have never bothered.

Did you see any threads that discuss jacking up, ever so slightly, the inner tie rod to help with the torque sensor slide in? Now you know.

I am surprised you were able to order one. They have been unavailable for some time. I found one dirt cheap on eBays years ago and put it away for a rainy day.

https://www.mobil.com/lubricants/-/m...patibility.pdf

Mobil 1 synthetic grease is compatible with urea grease, but urea grease is not compatible with calcium sulfonate grease like redline CV2 grease. So I would not use that grease in this application.

The AP2 sensor is a direct replacement. Currently in stock at hondaautomotiveparts.com, which is where I ordered mine in August. P/N: 53101-S2A-A03
