Removing engine
Ive taken out the engine while attached with the transmission before. We realized it was a pain so when when we put the drivetrain back, we put them in separately.
Im just stating that pulling both is possible but I would pull the transmission first if I had to do it again.

I work at a shop, and we have a lift and I have unfettered access to an alignment rack(Hunter, and is calibrated bi-yearly) so I don't care about doing an alignment. I put on some classical music and I can run through it in all of 40 min.
I think I've aligned my own car already about 5 times this year alone. Once for new tires, once because I swapped motor mounts, once again for my clutch, again when I changed suspension and, when I changed the wheel bearings.
I am planning on going to town on all the bushings, and also wanted to do some engine maintenance while I was at it, which is why I'm asking if removing the engine is possible this way, since I'm going to be removing all the control arms anyway.

You can drop it the way you described. Don't forget to disconnect the tie rods, no need to remove the shifter just the shift knob. I ended up leaving the steering rack in the car, tied it to cross member with a stretchy chord.
Also contrary to popular believe you can remove the engine with tranny attached through the top, it's a bitch and a half I would not recommend it to anyone your upper fire wall will look like a bacon strip. Never again!
