WD 40, good cleaning ... grease that sucker!

 

I seem to have solved my grinding starter problem by letting go of the button before the engine turns over. There is a very small window, a few tenths of a second, where the car starts but does not grind. It took a bit of trial and error to find the sweet spot. I haven't had a single grind since. No need to replace it.
