Slightly off topic but...I was at my son's school one day and noticed the family name on a painting in the chapel - it's not a common family name so it stood out. After a little research we discovered my great-uncle (grandmother's brother) went to the same school in the late 1920s-early 1930s. This was news to me because the family back then was based several hundred miles away. His name is on the roll of honor in the Founder's room as he was a prefect there in 1933. Sadly he died when his Lancaster was shot down over Holland in 1943, hence his name appearing on the painting.

We dug some more, and eventually we were stunned to discover the national film archives have footage of my great uncle at the school in 1930. The film was shot by my great grandfather. I don't know why but this affects me more than 89 years of separation from the event should.

Back on topic: My wife can't go to bed at night without watching half an hour or so of Antiques Roadshow, although we only get the UK version at the moment. She's an antiques fan and we have far more furniture than we really need.

Good story. Digging into the past can be very rewarding. I spent the winter of 2015 doing genealogy research for our families. Ended up with 187 pages of pure text, plus dozens of pages of multiple photos per page, identified 725 people, and traced some back to 1600. Every winter I tell myself I want to dive back in and do more, as I have many more leads to follow.
