BEWARE THE "CEL" FROM HELL (rant)
Close. The '06 and later warning is "Check Fuel Cap."
May trigger a CEL if left on long enough but I've only seen it on my car one (1) time and it was gone as soon as I tightened the cap.

The problem with the P1457 code is that you don’t know if the problem is fixed or not at least for a while. if the code is reset without doing anything to the car it can take a few weeks or months for it to show back up again.
Because I didn't get to sit and watch, I have no way of knowing which o-ring it was, although I was led to believe it was in front of either the 1st solenoid or the charcoal canister (which, by the way, was replaced twice as the first one would not hold vacuum). They gave me the 'bad' o-ring.... the inside diameter is about 3/4".... but there is no referenced part number on the repair order.
For what it’s worth, the original problem may well have been something more significant. The o-ring may have been unable to re-seal after the component it seals was first removed. With age, many rubber, plastic, or other soft parts lose their elasticity. While they are able to maintain a seal when undisturbed, they become too hard or brittle to be reused.
That was my question. The explanation was sort of understandable...... the failure was supposedly because something in the system would not hold 'pressure' (vacuum). When the system was being smoked, what pressure that was there was reversed from normal operation ('blow' vs 'suck') which reversed the load on the O-ring and it sealed, so no smoke escaped. Not totally convinced that is completely true, but I couldn't argue with it. (If they were blowing smoke my way, they did a good job of it.)
Other than the initial replaced canister (which was re-replaced), I've got no way to tell if any of the other parts (valves/solenoids) that were replaced were actually defective. Because it takes quite a few key cycles to find out if the thing is actually fixed, the "S" is getting a bit more daily exercise than it would normally. No salt on the roads yet, so I am enjoying the extra time driving it. I'm up to 20 key (start) cycles at this point, and (knock on wood) thus far the insidious CEL light is off. The only thing I do know is the darn O-ring was the last thing that was replaced..... so I gotta blame it.
For now, fingers crossed.
