Default Digital Camcorders

I'm looking to buy a digital camcorder. I want high def, hard drive unit. So far I'm leaning towards the Sony HDR-SR8.

I want a small, lightweight unit. I want to be free from tapes and dvd.

Any suggestions and/or advice would be appreciated.

Subscribing to this - if I can't resurrect my current one (doesn't seem to play back, though it still records), I may be in the market too...

I think Rob is looking for High Def. That Panny unit is SD.

Here's a question. I am considering the Sony HDR-SR8. Can the video recorded on this camera be played back on a conventional (not High Def) TV?

With my Sony HDR-HC7 (High Def tape model) you can hook up to a SD television using component (audio & video cable) or with S-video connections. You do have to go into the menu and adjust for the aspect ratio you want.

I haven't done it but that is what the book says!!

Actually I bought the HDR-SR7 yesterday from B & H Photo via the internet. I got a very good price and free shipping.

I didn't want to wait until today, Cyber Monday. I just didn't want to deal with the crowds on the internet, and I didn't want to get up extra early for the special promotions.
