Are those Great Horned Owls? They appear to be. I'm more jealous now than ever. I'm going to have to get some pictures of the golden eagles and peregrine falcons that live up on the mountain.

Yes, Raymo, they are. This is the first year they've been here. They're outside hooting right now. I love their sound.

Patty,

As usual, great pics.

We have Hoot Owls in the woods behind our house and it is easier to hear them than actually spot one. When I do see them, I am amazed by their mass and the size of their legs.

Glad to see this discussion. We only see hummers here (SE Michigan) when the trumpet vines are in flower. Late July early August. When we lived in Bracebridge, Ont. Canada one flew into our garage, was quite happy to settle on Alan's thumb and wait to be taken outside before flying away. I don't know which type he/she was.

These aren't clear but I finally saw the baby owl today. It's the white one in front and you can see the momma's feathers that look like ears, behind it.

It will be a few more weeks before they show up in Northern Virginia. But I am looking forward to seeing the "dog fights" in our back yard.
