I was there a few times when I was younger. It's very interesting and neat (for lack of a better word), but you have to stop every once in a while and think about all the bloodshed. You don't have to dwell on it, but you definitely can't forget about it.
It is a special place. When you think of all who died there, I was amazed at how peaceful it felt.

As we were driving in, I asked Rick to turn down the stereo, it just seemed like the right thing to do.

He was a momentary VSA though. He thought since the CD playing was by "Collective Soul" it was OK. He did turn down the volume though.

I've never seen any reference to New Jersey as being located south of the Mason-Dixon Line, Zip.

Actually Val, the southern part of New Jersey is south of the Mason Dixon Line in a convoluted way.

The Mason Dixon Line runs east/west along the southern border of Pennsylvania and due south separating Maryland from Delaware. The southern part of New Jersey is actually further south than the Mason Dixon Line where the line runs below Pennsylvania. None the less, because it turns south at Maryland instead of continuing east/west, all of New Jersey is in the north and considered to be "north" of the Mason Dixon Line.

Not to worry, nobody in or out of New Jersey would ever consider it a southern state.

I was thinking about memorials since there's so much debate about the 9/11 memorial @ WTC. Getting off-topic; but it seems to me there's a tension between remembering and moving on. I suppose in a place like Gettysburg you can leave the fields untouched...downtown Manhattan is different...or not?

You take a day off from reading this sight and the whole thing gets away from you. How come you guys get to drive so o o o o slowly? If we can get from MI to the Nor'Easter in three hours you should be able to get to Fall Colours ANYWHERE in about the same time. Thanks for the tip Lainey, we'll allow some extra time and take the short cut through Canada. TYM2FLY may be coming with us - hope he can keep up to Bill's schedule!

That's something that has always fascinated me as well. The balance between preserving history and allowing for the future. Dex, you are absolutely right, in a place like Gettysburg it is possible to preserve history and create monuments to the past whereas in a place like Manhattan the past oftentimes gives way to the future. I'm not sure which is right and which is wrong, and there needs to be a balance.

Then it's settled. We will all drive the two hours it takes to get to Gettysburg. Jerry will lead a tour. This time, he will do his homework and have the whole thing mapped out.

Everyone will read the book The Killer Angels before the meet.

And here I was going to juggle some vacation time so we could have the extra time to drive to PA in the fall. But since it's only two hours, we can leave after work on Friday, and get there in plenty of time to participate in the fun.
