Why the funny shift patterns for automatic trans?

Well...just to add to the confusion, check out the shifter on the 2006 MB ML350 and ML500. It's back on the column but push up for reverse and down for drive...that's it. Oh... they also have paddles on the steering wheel just to completly baffle us.

And, in the early days, there was also PNDLR on GM cars. There was a little problem when a driver in a hurry to get going (forward) would yank the lever as far as it would go and stomp on the gas.
