You can't run away from a few thousand dollars money grab no matter what
Even if you buy a car here, you'd have to pay taxes as well as complete safety and e-test

It's a scam I know

So, you'll pay $880 (for 6% import tax and 5% federal tax) when you import on the Canadian side.

At the licensing office you'll pay the remaining Provincial tax 8%- $640.

so all in for tax about $1500. RIV will be about $300. Canadian dollars.

You can't get away with not paying the tax and they tend to get pretty persnickety if you try to not pay taxes.

At the Canadian border they will convert the US to CAD in order to pay the correct taxes. I think you did that but US to CAD is about 30% more (hovering around 70 cent US to 1 CDN)

Don't forget that the RIV Program requires proof that your car is up-to-date on recalls. That caused me some grief as Honda USA would NOT provide a letter stating so to a Canadian. They are passive/aggressive about discouraging export of US S2000's. I was able to log into the Honda US Owner Link website and print a report stating there were no outstanding recalls. RIV accepted the report from Owner Link without any question. After that it was clear sailing for my '07 with DRL.
