My first very short accompanied test drive of a brand new car ( 100 miles on clock ) left me underwhelmed. In fact my slightly tuned 1.6 MX-5 felt faster, more responsive and sounded better.
It was not until I borrowed a well used demonstrator with 2000 on clock ( still unsold from June 2006 by the way !! ) for half a day and regularly VTEC'd it did I realise that the S2000 requires a diffferent approach to extract its potential.
As already advised by many far more experienced that I, the grunt is at the latter end of the rev band, ie VTEC, so lots of gear work to keep the revs high.
Result lots of go but I detect a high MPG penalty.
Love the car as I do, for one can potter at numty Civic speeds and play racing cars the next, it is an aquired taste. It depends on your driving syle and whatever gives you a buzz.
After a years ownership I still have some reservations, but too few to consider an alternative - yet

I fully empathise with your first impressions.

The former adds a VERY slight edge to the exhaust note but no detectable response gain, the latter just makes lots of ( lovely ) noise & in hot weather a slight loss of performance & increase in MPG
