A which Jack ? thread
Decided that they are probabaly the same import ones as the rest ( they all look pretty much the same) and with money needing to be spent on other things at the mo' went for the liftmaster one direct from the ltfauto site listed above - my heatshield/cat rattle is really embarassing so need to get under my car as soon as I can ! Should be arriving in the next day or so as I placed the order last week
Just wondering;
Everyone is looking at these ally jacks, looking on SGS their steel <£30 2 tonne jack is only 4mm higher than the 1.25 Tonne Ally one for ~£90, so it lifts .75 of a tonne less and only wieghs 1.5kg less. To me the £60 difference for 4mm more clearance seems a bit ridiculous, i mean you could just put a flat plate on the end rather then the cup and gain the 4mm back.
Is there an advantage i am missing in the ally jack?

Tony I think the main issue is for weight, not just transporting but also ease of use at home. In a garage you would usually have lots of space to keep and manouvre a heavy steel trolley jack combined with also having a solid and flat surface to push it about on. Being lightweight means that it is easy to put away somewhere in your garage if you don't always have a designated spot to keep it etc
I understand what your saying, especially when your talking about the large jacks that can be 50+Kg. But in this case, its 1.5Kg difference, surely that's negligible?
I've got a couple of steel ones (odd sods that i've had given to me, they are old) i use them regularly on a stone drive and and drift days on dirt. As i said they are old, so i've been thinking of a new one, i thought i would go ally but the options seem no better that steel but cost a lot more.
Will be interesting to see how much SGS knock off.

Ah right Tony I see what you mean now, the ~£30 2 tonne jack is an inferior product. If you look at the handle it is a thin one that just slots in place. Just like the ones you see for sale in Halfords. From this handle you can tell that lowering the jack precisely will be difficult because if you look closely at the zoomed in image of the rear of the jack there is a small 'dial/knob' (underneath where the handle connects) which is used for lowering the jack. - This one looks the same as my Halfords 'Big Red' jack which I despise.
The aluminium one has a thick handle which as far as I can see is a more permanent fixture and twisting the handle itself is used to lower the jack? This will enable you to lower the jack more smoothly rather than dropping your car to a sudden crunch! When you use the two different types of trolley jack you will know the difference in feel of quality / use.
Someone please tell me if I am wrong...?

I think Tony has a point, that £30 jack would probabaly do the job on a standard height car, I'm not sure why I didn't consider it but automatically overlooked steel ones.
Incidentally, I've still not heard anything from lftauto and more worryingly the info@lftauto.co.uk address bounces, the order receipt comes back from fangassociates@me.com and the payment ends up with chungwen@me.com It's all feeling like it could go horribly wrong at any moment, in fact I'm not even sure the jacks are in the country. I'll keep you posted.
