Default Speakers or head unit?

Hi all,
sorry if this has been covered before, tried to have a look with the search, but didn't get very far.
Basically, from experience, which do people feel makes the most difference? Replacing the speakers, or a replacement head unit?
I'm both time and money limited right now, new house is absorbing most of both, but I'd still like to do bits and pieces to my car. Little projects that I can do in a few hours are the only things likely to get done, and the less they cost the better.
I've still got the OEM head unit and speakers in there at the moment, no CD changer, and it all sounds a bit rubbish if I'm being honest, not awful, just not very good.
So, what would people recommend for best use of money and time? I've had a look at some of the fitting guides, and reckon either job is something I'd be happy to undertake.
Any advice would be most welcome,
cheers,
Dan

Fitted an Alpine head unit and it makes a big difference, so I'd do that first plus you gain extra functionality from the more modern head unit, whereas leaving the stock one in you are stuck with an old HU with poor internal amp driving decent speakers. Just MHO.

Sound deaden the doors as a first step IMO.

It's the cheapest option for a quick improvement.

Thanks for the advice. Think I'll go with the head unit first, as if I'm going to take off the panels to sound deaden the doors, I'll probably be in a good position to change the speakers

The best head unit in the world is still going to sound terrible through the stock speakers.

And the stock speakers sound terrible because there is NO sound deadening in the doors.

Where should you put the sound deadening on the doors?

Directly behind the speakers on the inside of the outer door skin. I'd also put a couple of smaller squares along the bracing bar in the door to stop the panel resonating off it.

I'd also put some around the speaker on the inner door panel but just make sure you don't foul the holes needed for the door card to clip back on.

To answer you're question, head unit then speakers. If you can do both then even better. Add a bit of sound deadening and you're good.

I've got a 4ch amp, front components and sub as well as stock rear tweeters. Car sounds good, but you still get resonance with the roof tray as I get little buzzes from the door - the plastic membrane in the door can vibrate at times.
