I too would agree that checking the earths/battery connections is a good place to start.
One of the main earths is part of the main fuse box (engine bay...next to battery) loom. A wire brush will clean this up if neccesary.

Have you tried recirc+wash+mute and seeing what pops up on the display?
Is that the S equivalent of the "three-fingered salute"?

I'd give it a go if I could understand it!!
I am guessing you press and hold air recirculate, mute and ???pull the wash stalk???
Is this a joke? Or does that actually do something?

I never realised how much an S and Windows had in common. Evidently if either act very strangely, just reboot!
Kudos to Tom and Rizlar - a combination of those suggestions appears to have resolved it. Just the weirdest set of symptoms....
If only every issue was as fast to sort out!! Thanks guys!

since they all seem to be related to the dash/steering column area, i'd say it's the earth point on the bulkhead.
i'll see if i can find the exact location for you....

ok, found what seems tobe the most obvious.
look under the drivers-side dash, on the side panel (could be behind/above fusebox). there is a ~10mm bolt with a handful of terminals connected too it, these terminals come directly out the side of a loom - check this point is clean and tight.
if your still unsure on location, take a look in the 3rd link of my sig, register, and grab the 's2000 00-03 service manual' pdf. page 874. i tracked it to that location from 'g401' ground point - search the PDF for more info on what G401 ground point handles - seems to tie in nicely with majority of your issues.
