Thoughts for IMPROVING the community

Why have community forums then? Why are you even here? If autocrossers are the salt of the earth, why are you bothering with a community of people with mixed interests?
It's pretty clear from my time on s2ki.com and contributions to many "help" and "DIY" threads that I care about the community as a whole. And freely give of my time to help. However, I don't frequent this subforum very much at all.
The question was: "How to increase membership?"
The current discussion revolves around recruiting members new to S2000s and doesn't touch upon how to recruit core members of s2ki.com that previously have chosen NOT to participate in these events.
I have made a lot of good friends autocrossing. They have very different interests outside of autocrossing, but they all share a commitment to others and a love of driving (and not just standing around looking at shiny cars in parking lot).
I'm hoping that more people like patinum and jeggy arrange meets centered around activities so people can self-select. The thing I love about autocrossing is that it quickly separates the doers from the talkers and places the emphasis on individual skill rather than the car they bought.
Hypothetical... Someone does an S2000 drive to Lake Geneva on Friday (looks like a nice day, wouldn't be a bad idea). They call their buddies, have a nice drive, take some pictures, then post up here on Saturday about their awesome drive to LG... what does that accomplish? The people there saw it, they don't need to see the pictures. But everyone else is left to think they are unwanted. When you're unwanted you go away (usually
). So yeah, if you want to discuss past S2000 centric events, they should be open to everyone.

When I saw the pictures of Aquatic's hand-control install day, I was very moved and sent the link to many people (including people who knew the previous owner of the controls). That wasn't an "open" meet. But I appreciate very much that he shared. Are you suggesting that we quash threads like that?
It's fine if you want to stick with your exclusive group of friends. We all have groups of friends, we do things together, that's life. But it doesn't have to be hashed out here.
So what would make me come to a meet?
Knowing that we had something more in common than "enthusiasm" for S2000s.
In college, I belonged to a "Service Fraternity." Our primary mission was community service and everyone was invited (co-ed). We had lots of social things, but the people who self-selected into a primary service organization were awesome.
Being constructive
This is a long-winded explanation of why I have not participated in the UMW up to this point.
I propose that in addition to the traditional "pose in parking lots and eat burgers and wings" kind of meets, we add themed meets:
Currently patinum and jeggy have started this with autocross / track meets.
I'd also add UMW S2k Volunteer Meets
Where we could do Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, etc.
That to me would be awesome. Because it weeds out selfish people pretty quickly.

So events like this would not interest you correct? This kind of meet would interest me personally since it has a lot to offer various people. You even have a photographer there!

I'm reading your past posts and basically, it sounds like if it's not philanthropy related or auto-x, you aren't interested. Does UMW ever do car events for Make a Wish Foundation, Arthritis Foundation any other charity? Would you attend an event like that? And, um... just so you know..selfish people show up at these events as well..

I appreciate the kind words Ckit. I too have met a lot of cool people autoxing (that's actually where I met jeggy for the first time as far as I can remember). And I love getting new people to autox/track and even getting enough S2000 owners out to them to call them "meets".
However, I also enjoy checking in with the community every now and then in a parking lot, looking at their new mods first hand, and having a face to face discussion over a beer and a burger. Parking lot pimping meets have their place. Given that the roads here blow, it's hard to really have a fun cruise. Activities like autox, track, watching a pro-race, or karting are obvious themed events...and those are the events I like to organize.
I really like your ideas as far as strengthening the community of existing members. i think some of us have found similar interests besides the car - and that's probably what's forming some of the "cliques". I think meets like going to the various area dunes have been good themed meets as well. These are the types of things that are keeping people here.
I think what's drawing people here though are parking lot meets and cruises. Again, I'm not a fan of cruises in the area because of the local roads and the great racing alternatives. But hopefully we can plan a drive through starved rock, galena, or kettle morraine. As for parking lot meets, I'm still going to go to them because it's a lot better than eating at home.
Someone posted a thought on meets at any time of the week. I think this is actually a good idea despite me not being able to attend anything during the week. Some people here operate on a difference schedule than the rest of society though, so allowing for meets on different days may allow for them to show up.

I never said it was some sort of rule (nor an issue) that our meets were held on Thursdays. I simply suggested more weekend meets for those who aren’t able to attend the Thursday ones.
^ good points Angela
but um..selfishily, i'd like to see when a weekend meet will be so I can come out and meet you guys... hell, I'll fly out to midwest or o'hare if someone comes pick me up... i'm not paying a taxi cab to join in on a group drive
