We are planning on doing the Dunes thing again. I think most everyone that went enjoyed it...
Love the Warren Dunes! The meet last year was fun. We should play UMW S2ki softball or volleyball this year.
I also agree on 'other than Thursday' meets for variety. I work 2nd shift and can only make weekend stuffs

I'm sorry I haven't had time to read through your complete list, dlg04, but the things I skimmed seemed like a slick idea. Thanks for sharing, and perhaps I'll comment more after I read it in-depth.
That being the case, I'll share this. There will always be strong willed people in every club. Sometimes they clash. And, when it happens, often others take sides. Don't be sucked into it. Keep the focus on the club and not the players. The club will endure if you make it fun. Stop making it fun, and people will run. The majority want to enjoy the experience and do not want to hear name calling, mud slinging, and bitching. Get off the negative and get on the positive track, otherwise there can only be more rough roads ahead.

I'm reading your past posts and basically, it sounds like if it's not philanthropy related or auto-x, you aren't interested. Does UMW ever do car events for Make a Wish Foundation, Arthritis Foundation any other charity? Would you attend an event like that? And, um... just so you know..selfish people show up at these events as well..

I often hang out and shoot the bull with my friends. But more often than not, we're wrenching or doing something semi-productive.
If I were 3 miles away and bored, I'd probably come to a burger and beer meet.
If I were 60 miles away and bored, I might come to a burger and beer meet.
If I were 200 miles away, I would probably come to a 20-car S2000 volunteer event / fundraiser.
If you're going to increase catchment past the immediate local vicinity, you'd have to offer something stronger and more distinct than standing around talking to strangers.
That's my opinion. Last weekend a buddy and I drove 1000 miles each way to Texas to autocross. We met up with 5 other friends from up here that also made the trip. We hung out in parking lots, drunk beer, and ate burgers. It was a great time.
"If you build it, they will come."
I think parking lot meets are great, but if you want things to change you have to do something in addition.

Tech-days are a GREAT type of nitch-meet that will get stuff done, and are great opportunities to help/teach/learn things. But have too many and people will run out of things to do on their cars, leading to a decline in attendance. These should be limited to between two or three per season, IMO.
Photo meets are a good way to find interesting places to take the car and show off the artistic value.
Auto-x and track meets are good for testing the limits of the car and the driver's nerves.-I'd love to take my car around Gingerman or Elkhart Lake some time. Perhaps not go all out hot-laps, but to have a good time with it.
Country Cruises are fun, and so are the parking-lot meets at a local state park, where there are other things to do than just stare at the cars.
Patinum posted something about a 24 hours of Lemons meet. I think it would be spectacular if we had an S2Ki/UMW team and car entered in the race and a few of our members would race it. Not only would this encourage the community to participate in a workshop to build the car (or simply keep it together), but also to be there to cheer it on.
I suggested something like a Poker-Run, but found out that another member use to have these, and quit due to lack of interest. I've posted twice about trying to get a group together for climbing (ok... ice climbing, which many people may find insane) and only got a couple responses, and none serious. And I know there are people on this board who do climb, or at least used to.
Would we have a Tennis meet? Baseball/softball meet? Basketball? Bowling meet? Frisbie Golf, Regular golf meet? Like climbing, not a ton of people are going to be interested in these secondary features to a meet. It'll attract just a few for a niche. But that's it. Trying to find something super fun to attract people from all over is going to be like trying to come up with the next super-hit toy. Some/most ideas will flop miserably, while that one special and unexpected idea sticks and takes off like jet.
