Hi everyone. I recently picked up a set of Mugens with the following specs: 17 x 7.5 +52; 17 x 8.5 +59. I was thinking of pairing them up with Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R tires in 225/45 and 245/40.
Should I instead stay at 215/45 and 245/40? Is there any advantages to other setups for these wheels like 225/45 and 255/40 or 215/45 and 255/40? This will be my summer setup where I will go on spirited, relatively short trips and will never see rain. I'll probably visit the track a handful of times (<5) but mostly intended for the street. Is there a more appropriate tire choice? I've landed on these RE-71Rs after some research but I definitely value the opinions of those on this thread.

You would want more meat in the rears as the car leans towards tail happy in most situations while in stock trim. Realistically though, I'm not certain you would notice a large difference. When I was running stagger, I always ran both front and back 10mm over to maximize the amount of contact patch I had.

Always best to look at the actual wheel manufacturer to see what sizes they actually offer. Width isn't the only measurement that matters with fitting a set of wheels. As import is the offset. For the 17's on these in the 7/9 stagger you have the option for a 17x7 +53 which is pretty friendly to the S2000 though since you are lowered you may still need a roll but could probably get away with out one if you are careful. The rears are an issue though since the highest they offer is a +38 which definitely requires you to roll the fenders and relocate the tabs and if you are doing that you may as well run a lower offset in front and roll the fenders since it will look more even front to back. Assuming you do the correct fender mods you can fit OEM ap2 tires easily and even do the CR sizing (255/40/17 in the rear) easily.
The 18's have a similar issue. The 18x7.5 +53 fronts are pretty reasonable but the rear are a problem. The most conservative option would be the 18x8.5 +47 which may be able to get away without a fender roll though I would bet your get some rubbing. If you wanted the 18x9.5 +38 for the rear it is even more of an issue than the 17 option above and would require the roll relo and alignment to fit. For the first option here you should be able to do a 215/40/18 front and 245/35/18 rear but again I can't be 100% certain you won't have rubbing issues with unrolled fenders. For the second more aggressive option with the 9.5 you could run the same tire sizes but it will look stretched and a 255 will make fitment more difficult. Not impossible but difficult.
Overall I would say the 17 sizes are a much better choice. Though you would still need to roll your fenders tires are much cheaper.

Your sidewall numbers are flipped. The rears should be 245/40/17 or 255/40/17. The 45 series sidewall is to tall for the rear and you need the 225/45/17 in front to keep the same diameter.
