^^ Sounds like a possible engine fire if the hood cover is gone, since those are sometimes designed to "fall" onto the engine in the case of a fire to help put it out.
i'd suggest an RDX, but don't think they are <$15k yet. the great honda/acura depreciation doesn't help when you want to buy used...
we had an A4 prior to the RDX that spent a lot of time at the dealer for service, mostly electrical issues. it was a 2003 model year, FWIW.

Since you love GM so much, add the Trailblazer/Envoy to your proposed list - they are well within your price range.
I think you should forget about a sedan entirely, a wagon would be cool (IMO) if you're open to it. I've always been a fan of Volvo wagons and you can certainly find them for less than $15k.

Unless you could get an RX8. Seats 4 and is s2000-ish. RWD but winter tires and all. Sorry, just amazed at how cheap used ones are now. Too bad you'd probably get better mpg with a SUV.
I was pretty pissed at the repair bill on Monday. I think, in the end, I am going to hang on to the Yukon for a few more years. Save up a few more pennies and then go find something I REALLY want.
Thanks for all the tips and suggestions though. It was fun researching them all.
