Paul Henbury was saying on the telly last night they expected the teams to be matching last year by half way through the year. But then Rosberg's qualifying-simulation time today is less than a second off his own pole position from last year, on tyres that are meant to be slower. They could be as fast as last year by the end of next week.

It kind of validates all the engine technology. If they can significantly reduce the amount of fuel, and still go just as fast, it's obviously been a big success.

While most people are gleeful that Redbull and Renault are having such issues, I'll be honest I think there is every chance we're misreading the situation.

I find it highly unlikely they would get things so wrong, and my hunch is they are just so close to the limits of what is possible under the regs. Once they find a balance and reel things back a bit my concern is that masked by what looks like reliability problems is something with absolute monster performance.
You are right
Hi Matt!

My concern would be far less Red Bull's ability to get the car right, and far more the problems with the Renault power train or whatever they insist on calling engines these days.

The big problem they've got now is that because of the engine problems, they haven't had the kind of running they need to work on all the other aspects of the car. So whilst all the Mercedes and Ferrari teams have been finding and fixing mechanical, gearbox, electrical, hydraulic etc. problems as well as getting the engines right, the Renault teams (which don't forget includes expected front-runners Lotus, as well as Toro Rosso and Caterham) are way behind where they need to be.

Another 4 day test starting on Thursday, and then it's P1 for Melbourne in a couple of weeks. Not much time to do anything.

Yup, I think Red Bull won't start the season well, but as long as Renault get their act together, never bet against Red Bull development rates!

I would bet against them, Newey is an aero designer and this year it is becoming apparent that the engine is what matters and Renault are struggling across all their teams.

The engines are meant to be frozen from today, but apparently Renault are seeking a 2 month extension...

Also I read the FOTA have disbanded. Shows how much chance there is of the teams working together; they can't even agree to have an organisation to represent them.

Not sure I can support Lewis now he's pretending to be Flavor Flav from Public Enemy. You'd think someone would tell him how ridiculous he looks
