I dont think the xbox has an actual HDMI out port.

As it is my Xbox HDDVD will not up convert std DVDs with component output only VGA and or HDMI will allow that.

So all I really need to do is purchase a new Xbox...sigh
The Xbox HDMI "cable" converts that monster, proprietary female connector on the back of the non-elite xbox system to an HDMI female jack. You can then use any HDMI cable to go from the xbox to the tv. That is what that little pig-tail doo-hicky is for. It is visible in the image on the xbox site Aaron linked to.

I researched this when I purchased my TV but didn't pull the trigger because that is too much money for the wee bit of resolution I would gain with it. Plus I have plenty of RCA ins and outs on the back of my TV.

You can also look at the grid on this page. It pretty clearly states that the standard Xbox 360 will have an HDMI output with "Cable Sold Separately."

UM all the 360's now have HDMI guts, mine does not as it's a 06 model.

Some research info

"I have a non-HDMI XBOX 360 core system mfg. 7/2007, the picture doesn't show it well, but all this package contains is a Standard HDMI cable and a adapter that connects to the large A/V port on the back of the 360 and goes out to SOUND ONLY.

This WILL NOT Adapt your Standard 360 A/V port to HDMI.

This product only works if your XBOX 360 Already has a HDMI port in the back and it just gives you ports for audio so you can attach your 360 to HDMI and your surround sound receiver. where as with just HDMI cable, the sound is just coming from your TV's speakers."

I guess I should just pick one of those cables up on my way home and test it. I'll be the guinea pig of the group. .

What pisses me off is my receiver was advertised to do upconversion on analog sources -- but I've discovered that it is only on 480p sources. So for regular movies, I could bump the Xbox res. down to 480p and let the receiver scale them. However, for games, I want them displayed in their native resolution not downscaled and then rescaled.

Also, the receiver does not support 1080p ANALOG output over HDMI. I would need to run a set of Component cables to the TV and change the TV source... As it stands now, I have the Xbox set to 720p Component input to HDMI output. I know that they're just numbers and my viewing distance / screen size doesn't even warrant this much stress.

So wait, even the new HDMI models don't support audio over HDMI??

LAFF.

I'm this close ][ to pitching this piece of shit out of the window and going PS3.
