Why yes you are

I was explaining why I didn't buy a 1080P TV, since I would have had to purchase one that had a VGA 15 pin input to get a slightly better picture and upscaling from my HD-DVD (XBOX) .

So there.

And I bet you'll never even be able to tell the difference

Truthfully at 42", its probably difficult to discern the difference between 720p and 1080p.

I can tell the difference on my 60", but I need to be looking really hard for it...

There's no digital audio with a DVI-HDMI cable. You have to run a separate audio cable. Not a show stopper but a bit of a pisser.

Three BluRay players are now under $300.
I'm thinking of picking up the Sony @ $299 with our $200 Best Buy gift card from Verizon FiOS

So $100 for a new dedicated BR player or $200 for a PS3 (I don't and won't do games).

I've seen some Blu-Ray players for under $200 now even (but not at BestBuy). PS3 is still one of the better players (minus the lack of a remote), because its upgradeable.

Just be wary that the Blu-Ray Profile is still in "flux" -- that is, certain features that are put onto discs are not fully supported by all players. For example, BD Live, which allows you to connect to the Internet with your player and download extra content only works on players which support the v2.0 Profile.

Many players on the market right now are only v1.1 compatible.

I know most Sony branded players are v2.0. Generally speaking you can tell if its v2.0 if it supports BD Live.

Not sure if v2.0 is the "final" version of the BD Profile, it may change again -- but at least you have the latest version.

This was one of the major advantages of HD-DVD - their spec was finalized before they started releasing movies, so your player wouldn't have been obsoleted if you were an early adopter. But the format wars are over now

If you don't play games, PS3 still offers a lot above and beyond a Blu-Ray player. Even though I'm a 360 fan, PS3 has a lot of good features like the ability to stream audio and video from your PC to your PS3 (or to play it from a burned CD/DVD or USB stick).

PS3 also has the advantage of downloadable content with a hard drive -- like a Sony Music or Sony Movie store where you can buy or rent music/movies online. So even if you don't play games, you might like some of the other features available.
