Liquid,

Thanks for the great PS3 review. I've been considering a PS3 for a long time but balked at the price, but It's come down enough to make it palatable. Any suggestions as to where to buy?

Another nice thing about the PS3 is there are several versions of Linux that run on the box so you can ditch the Sony operating system if you're so inclined.

I just pulled the trigger on the PS3, extra Dualshock controller, Blue Ray remote, Call of Duty 4, and GT Prologue. I just realized I don't own any Blue Ray movies!

It looks like BestBuy.com is selling the console with the old Sixaxxis (non-rumble) controller, whereas Amazon has the Dualshock in the box.

There's no digital audio with a DVI-HDMI cable. You have to run a separate audio cable. Not a show stopper but a bit of a pisser.
my point

Yeah the new Sony BR Player is 2.0 + BR Live + HDMI 1.3 with audio...

Does the PS3 do audio over HDMI?

If you run Linux on the PS3, many of the PS3 Sony features are not available like downloading from Sony's store for music/videos -- but I believe there is a Media Player that they are working on for Linux on PS3 (IIRC, its actually the old Xbox Media Center that used to be used to run on hacked Xbox 1's).

As far as where to buy -- occasionally, SonyStyle.com (the Sony store) will offer great deals on purchases from their store. For example, earlier this summer they offered a $100 debit card if you opened a SonyStyle credit card and purchased something from SonyStyle.com using their card.

Otherwise, if you don't want to buy used -- I would watch and see what deals start coming up for Christmas. Slickdeals.net is a great place to find deals -- I know sometimes Amazon runs good deals on video game hardware. There may be some really great deals this Holiday season too because of the economy. Black Friday might be extra good

Yes. I don't recall if it supports DTS-HD, but it definitely supports the old DD5.1, and DTS over HDMI, and it supports Dolby Digital TrueHD over HDMI.

It also supports up to 7.1 PCM over HDMI, which is good if your receiver doesn't support Dolby Digital TrueHD, it will just send the raw uncompressed signal to your receiver and you can take advantage of DD TrueHD.

thx for the info! I might just have to pick one up used. I've got the logitech 880 so i don't have to worry about the remote control.

Actually, I don't think the PS3 works with the 880/890/One/anything unless you buy the "fix."

And I believe the PS3 decodes everything except TrueHD DD- that was an HD-DVD thing iirc. It doesn't matter what the PS3 can do, however, if your receiver can't reproduce it. Some audio codecs must be passed via HDMI, not component.

PS3 only supports a remote via Bluetooth, and none of the Harmony remotes support that yet.

You could optionally buy a USB IR receiver for the PS3 which I bought ( http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3-Blu-Wa...e/dp/B000R5H7KE ), or you can buy a more complicated IR to Bluetooth converter but they're like $70+ -- not worth it in my opinion.
