My house in Illinois is in a quiet part of town with a LOT of open space and land around. A marsh area just beyond some fields. I used to hear coyotes howling all the time. It always freaks me out when you see them in the shadows from afar trotting about, especially when walking my dog out at night. They never really came close to the houses, but there have been occasions, late at night when I would look out the back window and see a small pack(maybe 2-3) running full speed across the fields, barely catching the reflection of a few street lamps. Never heard of any issues with the people in the area, but the fact that they are there, always freaked me out.
