Default Daughter paid me a great compliment

I let my 18 year old daughter drive my S2000 up the mountain on 211 through the Shenandoah Park (Northern Virginia) for the first time today. If you're familiar with this highway you know that it has two lanes going up and one lane coming down, and some very nice tight curves. I love to "blitz the mountain" on my CBR600F4.

She was scared that she would wreck the car, so she took it very easy. We did pass a few cars on the way up, but I had to coax her to go a little faster. I don't think we ever topped 50, though.

When we got to the bottom on the other side I took over the driving chores. I showed my daughter what the S2000 was made for. I was busy driving so I didn't keep an eye on the speedo, but I did see 80+ once. My daughter said that was in a corner!

Anyway -- the compliment was paid while she was describing our adventure to her boyfriend. She said I
drive in real life like you were driving in the Gran Turismo video game!
WOW!! I haven't lost my teenage invulnerability, yet. It was a blast, and I never felt anywhere near out of control, even when the rear kicked out slightly on one very tight curve. I love this car. Too bad we won't see many beautiful "summer" days like today in Virginia for a while. If it's like this tomorrow I will be taking my CBR out. I haven't ridden it since I bought my VehiCROSS.

... I took my 14 year old son and BobG took my 12 year old on a ride to the North Georgia mountains two weeks ago. I guess they must have thought it was going to be a nice scenic ride. After two hours of high speed turns up and down the mountains they both remarked "Dad, this is so much better than Six Flags".

The dilemma here is to educate a potential young driver that this is the way to drive only with experience and not in daily life. I am still two years away from them driving, and they both know they will NEVER drive my car alone, but them seeing their Dad and his friends drive as fast as we do does concern me.

I took my 17 year old cousin out for a spin up Highway 9 in the Santa Cruz Mountains earlier this year ans her comment was "This is like going to Magic Mtn (6 flags in LA) but the ride just keeps going! this is Kewl!"

I'd say thats still the best compliment I've gottten for me and the car.

My daughter also made that comment about it being like the scariest roller coaster ride ever. But, I know she loved it.

As far as being concerned about my daughter learning to drive, thinking that driving fast was OK, I have allowed my daughter to learn that on her own. I have a great deal of trust in her and her common sense.

I taught her how to drive in my '82 Mustang GT 5.0 with 5-speed. I knew this car would become her daily driver as soon as she got her license. She knew it's capabilities, and it's limitations. She had driven with me several times when I was power shifting at 5000 and grabbing rubber. She knows how to do this now, too. She's been known to "light 'em up" when the opportunity arises.

She has been driving the Mustang for 2 1/2 years with no major incidents (she had a deer jump out of the woods and side swipe the car on the highway one night. Lost the driver's side mirror, but no other damage.) One speeding ticket (a cop tailgating with his brights on. She was just trying to get ahead enough to not be blinded) and one other moving violation (running a new stop sign in our old neighborhood) resulted in her losing her license for three months (she was under 18, it's a state law) and increased awareness of what the penalties can be for breaking the law. She may not STRICTLY obey all speed limit signs, but she is careful about her speed in relation to traffic and conditions.

My OLDER daughter (almost 21) has never driven the S2000, and may never drive it. In her short driving career she has wrecked every vehicle she has driven regularly. She lacks good judgement and doesn't pay attention to her surroundings. I consider this more dangerous than what she is driving or what she may have learned from my driving style. I've ridden motorcycles all my life, so constant attention and defensive driving is second nature. I wish I could teach her that.

Yeah, it's a blast!!! Gotta love that S2000 handling.

That's a sweet piece of road you got there Gregg. Hauled it many times in (and on) a few nice rides. In fact, I took the S there the day I picked it up.
