Help to unlock new AT&T Blackberry for Taiwan use?
hey guys,
I tried a google search and every site either wants you to pay and calling ATT is not really an option since I'm already here in Taipei....
I want to email ATT wireless but to email them I have to register first on their stupid site which only sends my temporary password via text msg to my phone but since I'm already here in Taipei, my phone won't work on ATT network.
Bought a local SIM Card but it won't recognize the card. Any cell phone guru's can help me unlock my new phone ASAP? I really need my phone for this week long trip here and sucks right now.
thanks,
rick

Call 1-(916)-843-4685, that's AT&T's international support line, you have to tell them you are going to be traveling overseas where you are going to need to use one of their foreign sim cards.
They are going to ask you why your going there, make something up, but they have to feel convinced your actually traveling.
If you can't call this number from there, have someone you know call from the states that you trust with your information (i think all they need is varify name, address, and last four of social).
It is very important you sound very convincing and enough to have that rep on the phone give you the unlock codes over the phone. If not i think they will email it to you, but it takes a week or more.
Hope that helps

Of course it would have to be unlocked first. Easy! Go to some local phone shops over there and have them unlock it for like 10 bucks or so.

You thought by popping in a local SIM, it would work?

just as a safety precaution i'd back up anything important before taking it to someone to unlock. when i took my nokia to someone (here in taipei actually) to unlock a few years ago, i thought they would just type in a number and voila, unlocked phone. actually what happened was they just wrote over the firmware with an unlocked version and in the process deleted everything on the phone. so i lost all my pictures and phone numbers. that sucked!
ps- you here for work or vacation? or living here?

It's not about the money, I'll gladly pay to get it done right but just hesitant to hand over my phone to just "anyone" and they #### it up!
I'm in taiwan on business....
Anyways AT&T just emailed me the instructions but I'm confused:
What are they talking about in turning off the radio and how do I enter those letters in steps 5 and 6?
Anyone done this before?

AT&T Wireless
BlackBerry 7100g; Blackberry 7130C; Pearl 8100c; Blackberry 8300
Step Action
1 Insert Cingular SIM into device
2 Power phone on and Turn off the radio (Turn Wireless Off option) VERY IMPORTANT.
3 Select "Options"
4 Scroll down and select "SIM Card"
5 Type "MEPD" (multitap means this will be typed in [M] [ER] [OP] [OP] [DF])
6 Type "MEP2" (multitap means this will be typed in [M] [ER] [OP] [OP] [TY])
7 Enter the Unlock Code
8 Press enter
9 Reboot device. Device is now unlocked.

Go into your applications and select Turn Wireless Off. The icon looks like a rocket-shaped antenna thing with rings around the top of it.
I assume you have a phone with a keypad with shared buttons and SureType.
They are just instructing you on how to enter MEPD with the keypad in case you're retarded and have never typed anything on your BlackBerry before.
