Your father's very lucky. That watch probably retails above $300,000 (USD).
So I'm not a jewelry or watch guy and probably haven't worn a watch since middle school. The only piece of jewelry I wear is my wedding band. But I've been thinking more and more that maybe I should start wearing a watch to follow the old cliche and "grow up" because every man owns a watch. I would love to own an Omega Seamaster (huge Bond Fan here) but with 2 kids money is an option. I've noticed a few ads in a couple of mags I have for Nixon watches. They've always striked me at decent looking so I went on their website and they have some fairly good prices. Again I no nothing about watches so anyone have any experiences with them? Would I just be better looking at some of the other less costly options discussed in this thread?

What makes this watch so expensive? Cheapest I've seen online is 300,000. I know nothing about watches.
The tourbillon movement was designed to make the watch more precise and have the movement not be affected by the effects of gravity. It's effectiveness has been debated, but it's complexity and cost to make are not.

Now the repeater is where things get really insane. Essentually, the watch is equipped with a button that, when depressed, sounds chimes that correlate some element of time. This starts with the "easiest" of telling you the hour, whereas the minute can tell you the exact time.
Now think about that. On your wrist, you have a completely mechanical object that will give a series of chimes that will tell the wearer what the time is. It is an unbelievably complicated movement. Actually it is the most complicated and expensive movement because of the precision required.
Repeater
This watch, the JLC Grand Sonnerie, along with being a repeater, can play the famous Westminster chimes (Big Ben). It is priced at over $2 million.
You can pick up many watches at discounted prices online - (jomashop/amazon etc) Although, personally Im not sure how reputable those are (I've never used them, I have no experience) But they could work well if you are looking for something within a price range.
and again, watches are a personal thing - it all depends what you like. I've never looked into nixon, but after some research they are associated with billabong. The materials they use are good. it would all be up to your tastes.
personally, I would just go for the gusto and get a tag, or an omega, or whatever, it'll last you, damn-near forever. it may take time and shopping around, but you'll get what you wanted, and you can enjoy it.
There are many options for you, just find what you like.

Personally I'm not wealthy, and I don't consider myself a watch snob. However, I enjoy the history of watchmaking and the romanticism that comes with it. One thing I've long decided though, is that I would only buy a watch from a watchmaker, not from a fashion brand. Would you rather have a car made by Honda or one made by Nike? Don't get me wrong- watches are so simple that they easily cross the boundary into fashion. However, for my money I would rather pay to have a company that is strictly in the watch business.
Nixon makes very trendy and fashionable watches, but they are an accessory company- not a watch company. That would bug me a little bit, but I don't mean to imply that it should bother you too.

As stated earlier, watches are personal accessories, you should buy what YOU like. It's not like a car, there's no amount of info on reliability or performance that should change your mind one way or another. In essence, they all do the same thing- tell you what time it is.

Do what you do then, and buy what you want.
Anyone who looks down on you based on your priorities is a 'tard anyway.
(Well, assuming your priorities aren't retarded, but that's another ball o' wax altogether.)

Have never seen that baby before. Amazing!
