Thanks. That's why I'd like to be able to hook my phone up via android auto--I pay AT&T enough already.
Just tested wired android auto. Downloaded the Android Auto app on my phone, then opened up Zlink on the Joying unit. Connected immediately and works flawlessly.
See video. I also took a phone call on it without a problem. But I can test something else if you want me to try something specific.
I was also able to bind the CH button on the dash to function as mute. So the only button I can't bind is the actual mute button on our cars. Not a big deal. All others can be custom set right on the head unit, in combination with the ASWC.
It looks like that Joying unit is thin enough where you can just use some double sided tape and tape it to the dash and have that flat wire routed (hidden) down somehow?

Yes, but to do it cleanly I think you'd have to route through the dash, cutting it in the process. Maybe could get creative and work it through the edge of the AC vents, or something like that, but you'd need to order the longer cable from them. Only 10 bucks.
The wire connector on the back of the screen also protrudes a bit, like half an inch. So it wont sit flat while plugged in. ( https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...04d7107d5a.jpg )
You'd have to cut out a small nook in your dash if you wanted it to sit somewhat flat on there, wiring aside.
I wanted to update everyone as I installed this 8.8" Joying unit with 4G. (JY-HOS01N4GS-2). You can get it on ebay, make sure it's the very wide version 8.8" from my photos, and OPs photos (Canadian_2k). It's still being sold for around $350. Got it earlier this week.
Toecheese, it's the same model you linked.
The version I got on ebay had this clock on the right side of the screen that was ALWAYS there. But Joying offers downloads of different Android Roms so I was able to install a different Rom and get it removed.
I have a sim card in it and it works great. 4G Antennas, GPS, a microphone.... A fully functional, single-din, internet-connected android tablet in my car that actually fits well with the design? Yes sir.
The unit has a detachable screen so figuring out how to install it at an angle is the hardest part. I went with steelies, which are these magnetic ball joints. This allows me to position the screen more than a static mount would allow. I can modify the position. Theyre also rock solid once installed, and I'm using two of them on this lightweight screen. I also bought a used radio door assembly so I could use it for this head unit in particular and save my old one. That way if I need to cut anything I wouldn't care. But I didn't have to cut anything, just remove the door itself.
See my photos below. I love this unit. Android auto looks great on it. Spotify, dunkin donuts, youtube, google drive, google chrome. All look great. You can download whatever you want via Google Play store. I can order coffee from my car lol. Some apps like hulu and netflix wouldnt run for me. Although I suspect you may be able to find different APKs that are modified to support it. Other apps just look odd on the superwide screen. They are not obviously designed for such a wide screen. But most look fine. I also installed a new android launcher and ditched the Joying one that came with it, which means I could fully customize the whole unit. Icon designs, size, layout, app tray, dock, etc. Endless possibilities.
Dont mind the foam tape at the bottom. Its a temporary solution until I get some thinner tape. I just want a softer surface on the bottom of the screen than the metal.
I'm also planning on painting or using some thin tape to cover the raw metal bezel. It doesn't match anything else in the car.
Took your idea with the magnet mounts and added a bit more tilt! Came out better than expected

Looks great man, nice job. If you ever want to permanently remove that clock on the right side of the screen you can, just so you know.
I can see why they moved to this newer clock version UI, android apps were never supposed to be that wide. So they effectively went from 1280x480 to 980x480 by adding that clock. Apps behave better.
That being said, I like it removed. Its a waste of space. We have a clock in our car. Android auto works great that large, google maps full screen looks great, and I can deal with some other apps not looking ideal. The ones I use the most look fine.
And I dont like the look of any of the their software really. Looks cheap. There are better automotive launchers you can install to make it your own.
Yeah. Joying support sent me a zip file. I extracted it onto a FAT32 USB flash drive, plugged it into the head unit, and it autoupdated to the rom you see in other screenshots, which is just your standard looking Android Oreo 8.0. Took all of 5 minutes once they sent the file.
If you're looking to customize it, this is what you want. Find a nice live wallpaper, a cool launcher like Nova launcher, icon packs that you like, etc. I spent hours getting it just right.
