Do rear speakers really help?
Alright Shaner - so skip the JL's but here's something that somebody has to try. Maybe you..... Audiophile in the real world. What's the best sound. Well, I say, Electrostatics. Certainly for highs there is a very strong argument. So why not put some electrostats in the car. Monsoon makes them M-1000's. They are thin as can be so they should fit a whole lot of places. Or maybe one of the Jannsen old time tweeters on Ebay or even better, how about the AMT-1 Tweeters from ESS (Ebay again) Someone has to try this. I nominate you!
I just purchased Polk EX402A's & EX602A's for this mod....thanks for the excellent write up....makes me even more sure that this is going to be something I'll be happy I did.

Just do it! Try not to think about it from an audio theory perspective, b/c it just doesn't seem to make much sense, but it works wonderfully. Not only are the highs better, but I got a much stronger bass feel b/c of the speakers vibrating right behind me (Eclipse Point Source...YMMV depending on speaker selection). It's actually got enough solid bass now to make me forget about a subwoofer!
Just did my install tonight- DO IT!
The rears do provide a fill in so far as the doors could be heard but sometimes muffled by the wind noise that we are all accustumed to. The rears fill in for that muffle. Couldn't be happier with my set up now and just thinking maybe a low power amp to add a bit more power to speakers that can handle it.
Stock head unit- Kenwood 6" in the door and lucids rear in the back with kenwood 4". Ecstatic with the difference. A low priced mod that really makes a difference.

YES! A couple of my S2K budies in town have done it and even with inexpensive speakers it makes a big difference as it just fills the cabin with sound. If you use high end speakers, see this thread, https://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.php?...?threadid=24271 , then it is even better.
Chris doesn't really need a sub now as his Eclipse Point Source speakers make a pretty nice bass thump that you can feel and hear. His speakers were a bit more difficult to install but worth it.

I installed my new stereo this past weekend. I had professionals handle the work. I installed a new head unit - Pioneer deh 9300. Wow- what a unit. I installed 5 1/4 inch Oz speakers in the doors, with sony 4 inch behind the seats. Powered by the Alpine F307. Boy, what a difference in sound. The rear speakers really add alot to the sound field. I am most impressed with the difference the head unit can make in overall quality of the system. Everyone should consider a new headunit and rear speakers. GaToR
