just as a side note -- i got to thinking, and Boston has some subs that can handle some pretty serious power and do it in fairly small enclosures. that's a bit less 'fly by night' for you guys who aren't sure about the ED subs.

thank you all for your well wishes regarding the twins. she's at about 35 weeks now, so she should pop very soon. one boy and one girl on the way... one of which actually will be another Philip J. (i'll let you guys figure out which is which... )

Bill, a lot of folks here have vouched for no spare, and now carry a can of fix-a-flat instead. i didn't make that choice, but sometimes wonder if i should have. the RX8 doesn't even come w/ a spare (you have to order it as an option), but instead comes with a fix-a-flat kit in a bag. i would however encourage you to get AAA or something for towing though... and be sure they cover flat bed trucks - the S can't be towed w/o one.

Dave -- that's a huge sub... i bet it could qualify as an amusement park ride for small kids... just throw on a 10 hz test tone and watch them bounce around...
i can't help but wonder what that thing sounds like... loud, i'm sure... but good?

the problem w/ the Alpine and IPOD question now is that no one really knows... i've heard both that the IPOD would work for any AI-Net compatible head unit (that has a 'folder' button) and that it will only work for '04 HU's. i can assure you though that the "MM Driver (Hard Disc Drive) Ready" is NOT an IPOD reference. Alpine is releasing something on the order of Kenwood's Music Keg, and this references that... it's a HD setup with a docking bay i think... i've heard a good bit about it, but haven't had any hands on experience with it or any literature. if Alpine releases a new HU w/ amber lighting and IPOD controls, i might consider upgrading myself... i'd love to get the improved HU crossover controls as well.

Bill, i bought the 7894 (2002 model) originally for several reasons. it had an IR remote, the built in crossover, time correction (which i wanted and have been exceptionally pleased with), as well as it offered MP3 playback and amber lighting. those were the 5 key features that i really wanted on my HU. i also ended up w/ a motorized face (for better or worse) with the deal.

regarding the new 2004 models for Alpine -- i'm just not finding much information out there at all... even Alpine's site doesn't seem to have any info... i get a page not found when i go to look up head units and in their tech section - they have no manuals listed for the new gear.

I've called and e-mailed just about everyone I can think of. No useful info so far. Alpine is closed today because of Martin Luther King. It seems odd that Alpine would have a press release, but not back it up. My main concern is the cable, what kind of cable should I use, and should I anticipate buying any more products for the Ai net? I just don't want this system to be installed at great expense only to have it tore up just to lay a new cable.

I feel pretty confident that he new HU's with the Ai net will be able to control the ipod.
but honestly - i don't know.

Tomorrow I call Alpine directly and see if we can get to the bottom of this!

No news on the ipod yet.

The sub enclosure is recessed, & I want to build a fake trunk bottom so that when my wife goes to the grocery store a bag of potatoes it won't ruin the sub. Did you do this with your sysem and how did you do it?

Here are the subs I am thinking about putting in besides the Elemental Designs. I found out tonight that my enclosure has 1.4-1.6 cubic volume. Too big for the ED but perfect for the Audiobahn. What other tens match this enclosure size? There are just too many and I can't decide. I want silver 'cause my car is Sebring. That will improve my overall "BLING" score.

Polk Audio MM Series MM104
$219.95

Audiobahn ALUM10Q
$174.95 originally $349
http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/ABNALUM15Q
Even cheaper at online car stereo:

I really like the look of this sub and the price drop is pretty sweet. But I've never heard one.

Any thoughts on these subs would be helpful. I don't like gangsta subs, I like a tight fast sound.

my car also sometimes subs as a grocery getter, so i also have to protect the sub. i've chosen a different route for my setup, which i'm guessing you haven't seen, so i'm linking it in... i have a cargo net that i use to hold most of my junk, and i occasionally work/think on a good speaker grill for my e8a.

your enclosure? it's that big? wow, i didn't realize that.

and imo the Audiobahn sub is going to be a boom monster and not reflect a good sound quality. i've only heard a couple, and admittedly they were setup for boom... but i found them to be sloppy doing even that... the Polk sub looks to need a much smaller enclosure than what you have... .66 cuft?

wow, a 1.5 cu ft enclosure means we need to look at some different subs... and now, 800 Wrms for a sub may be a lot to high for the application...
i'll have to look around at some point...

maybe Dave has some ideas?

The 1000Wrms sub I'm using is only a 1 cuft enclosure. Of course the entire Image Dynamics brand is known for it's limited airspace requirements.

Just my $.04 Canadian.
