I was going to disagree with you, as a system is only as good as its weakest link. However, I think it's just your choice of words that caught me - one item "compensating for" another...
If what you're getting at that even the cheapest speaker is still a mechanical device that will respond to/reflect what's being sent to it (so improving the amplifier gets more out of the speaker) vs a poor amplifier is sending a weak signal all the time, so upgrading the mechanical linkage doesn't do much good - then I agree.

looking to upgrade my speakers too so this thread is very helpful.
I see a link for those Polk Audio speakers and was wondering if i'd notice a huge difference between those and say, a $200 set of speakers. I have someone to install them for me (i'm not comfortable taking apart my own car) and i think close to $300 total sounds a bit too high...
For the record I have no idea what other speakers they would be

^ The Polks are more efficient. Infinity, not unlike many other manufacturers, expresses their sensitivity @ 2.83v rather than @1w. This makes it look like they are more efficient than they are when compared with speakers rated @1w.
db651s - 92db @ 1 watt
6022i - 87.5 dB @ 1 watt (but first spec is 93.4 dB at 2.83 volts)
- not that sensitivity is going to define how a speaker sounds, only how loud it can play relative to another. if powering off HU power, it's an important consideration. but hopefully you can find a local shop to listen to both and see which sound you prefer.
