Radar detectors
The trim pieces are really easy to remove to route the wire. I ended up splicing mine into switched power for the radio as it was easier for me to reach than anything near the fuse box. The ground is around one of the radio mount screws. Works perfect. I used a DIY from the "other" s2k site to show me what to do with the trim pieces.
V1s arrows saved me once when there were two cops within about a 1/2 mile both using radar. It went off for the first 1, and then it told me there were 2 radars, and after I passed the first cop the arrows said one was coming from the front still, and 1/2 mile later there was another cop sitting there. With my old detector, I would have just thought it was all from the same (first cop) and sped up into the second cop for a nice ticket
In addition to the above, it's handy for knowing if you've passed a cop running front only radar running the opposite direction. You're certainly free to do whatever you want but I don't see any point in slowing down in such situations.
Additionally, radar can only be used within a certain range of angles. Google cosine error which increases as the angle increases. If a radar unit is shooting perpendicular to the road you're on (i.e. 90 degrees) then it really won't be able to get a usable reading on you.
In general, it helps to not only know where the radar is in relation to you at a given point in time but to also know if you're passing the source (arrows indicate in front, to the side and behind). With the V1's ramping I can tell if the source is closing in or not and take appropriate action. Anything that helps you with situational awareness (a must for any RD) is a plus.
Again, I highly recommend reading up on a suitable resource such as radardetector.net. I mean, you're not currently reading up on the S on a generic car forum, right?
Again, subjective and range, while a plus, isn't everything. The V1 does not offer the best range on all bands for all RD's out there. Do your own research, use the manufacturers' 30 days to make sure that what you picked suits you. Don't rely on the opinions of others unless you're absolutely certain that your needs/wants are identical to the opinions that you're using as input and definitely read up on a suitable resource.
I strongly prefer the V1 but I wouldn't just blindly recommend it to people. It is notoriously chatty but I find it useful as I'm familiar with the usual falses and can tell if it's falling out of tune (again, back to false sense of security). I also have a remote mute switch on the turn signal stalk to quickly silence it as desired. Not everyone's willing to put up with or use this approach. Some find Truelock and other features on the Escorts highly desirable. Some need stealth. Do your own research and pick what suits you best.
I posted this earlier in this thread but, again, I used http://www.s2000.org/mods/radar/

not tryin to sound like a douche, but what is the benefit of knowing which direction the radar is coming from?? no matter where its coming from your still subject to possibly getting a ticket, so wouldnt you slow down no matter which direction it came from?
