I have grown tired of my Boston Pro 10.5LF in its miniscule 0.5ft^3 box... it provides extremely detailed accurate bass at low volumes but offers uncontrolled cone movement at high volumes (not enough air to compress)...

My solution: I am going to seal up the area under the roof well and use it as a sealed enclosure for 2 Boston Pro 10" (I just have to go out and purchase another). Being realistic, I'm sure I will not be able to seal the entire cavity, so I will have to refer to the "enclosure" as a free-air solution... Most importantly is that none of the "enclosure" leaks into the passenger compartment and only leaks into the trunk...

Hopefully I will have this done for the 'Fall Colors Meet'...

A couple of questions:

1) What is the max size woofer you can fit in the stock door locations.

2) Is there room under the passenger side dash (under the airbag - where the glovebox is on a normal car!) to fit an 8" sub with enclosure?

Thanks.

Has anyone tried to mount an amp near the ground behind one of the driver's seats? Will it work? It seems like a very nice location.

This is a really old thread but since this is the second time I found it and read it (this time not even searching for stereo options) I'll add my 2 cents. After judging and being an independent and factory car audio rep in the heyday of car stereo, contests, etc in the '80's, I've seen almost all of it. My car was done with the JL Stealthbox 10" that fits exactly in the well in the trunk WITH the tool foam UNDER it which is nice because you still have your scissor jack, tow hook, wheel wrenches and/or room for tools. I put a very small air compressor, a can of Fix-a-Flat, pair of pliers and other tools, and a quart of oil in a ziplock bag plus a deep well socket, extender, breaker bar, ratchet for my custom wheel lugs in there and finally an auger and plug kit. The goal is that since there is no spare anymore (pointless with my big brake kit) if I'm in the middle of nowhere, perhaps I can jack it up, pull out the nail or whatever, auger a plug into the hole and refill with the compressor, if that doesn't work, try the fix a flat and compressor just to try to drive to a station, tire store, hotel, whatever without having to get AAA and a rollback.

I've got Boston Acoustics speakers in the stock locations and a single multi channel JL 900 watt amp running everything where the spare tire was with room now for more stuff there (car wash stuff, more tools, even luggage?). All things considered, the car gets loud enough and sounds great for what it is. The post above that this isn't a car for serious tunez is totally correct but the well and a nice sealed sub is a nice balanced sound. My Alpine head unit has an adjustable sub output which is important to "tune" the amount of base based on the content.

I am FASCINATED with the idea of the secret firewall compartment behind the pedals, what an awesome find. Not sure if I'm willing to cut mine open down there but that is really cool.

Finally, at Rock the Dragon I wanted to comment that I was awed at the Monster Roll Out morning when Bama Dave opened his trunk and he had a FULL SIZE spare matching wheel with a matching tire mounted sitting vertically in the tool well and it fit perfectly with the trunk closed. This brings up my final point. The JL Stealthbox and 10" sub shocked me that it weighs 42 pounds. That is a LOT of weight to be that far back behind the axle and I had to leave it out of the car for the 2000 mile Dragon trip so I could take a week's worth of luggage and booze and still was scraping tires on unrolled fenders. The same weight issue would be true for carrying a true full sized (and I mean FULL SIZED) spare like Bama Dave is doing. He ain't getting stranded in the middle of nowhere, very cool.

Putting the sub in the second secret compartment behind the pedals on the floor and near the engine is IDEAL for a weight placement and location but is not ideal like the trunk box from the standpoint that it is permanent and can't be taken out for a track day or Dragon run, etc.
