I'm new to the S2000 world and just got an S2000 with 370,000 miles for a really good price, so now I'm going to build the motor. My budget is around $2500.

Any thoughts or pointers ... or can I even rebuild with $ 2500?

What would you guys do ? I'm in so cal

 

It'd be tough to do for $2500.. for that price your best bet is to buy a good lower mileage ap2 short block.

Factory parts are very expensive and I can tell you that you will have to go with oversize pistons. A motor with that many miles will have ovaled/egged cylinders.

to do a complete motor with new oil pump, timing chain, tensioner, refresh the head with a valve job, new guides, seals, new springs and retainers you're looking at around $3800-4000 or so.

 

I agree with Wadzii for I did the same you did bought a cheap s2k with a ton of miles. Im driving the car until winter then Ill tear her apart and do a build. for 2500 you might be able to get the head built though but not the whole motor.

 

I agree to I just did one with new everything except the crank and I'm at just about 10,000 to 15,000 I lost track after 10,000 lol

 

But you might be able to resuse a lot of stuff but I would just get new rings, head gasket, timing chaine, head studs, cluch, throw out bearing, motor mounts, maybe bearing it just depends.

 

Big difference in cost to BUILD a motor vs just to rebuild it. Its not going to take $10K to rebuild, especially if you just replace things that need replacing, and aren't going for added performance.

But befroe you even go there, what is your compression on all 4 cylinders? Does it burn a lot of oil or knock? Are you sure you even need a rebuild? You might be able to get away with driving it as-is for many more miles before an engine issue forces a rebuild.

Once that does happen, with that many miles on the car itself, I would be thinking to drop in a good used motor (as already mentioned), rather than rebuild. Would be cheaper, and faster to complete.
