MR2 vs S2000
No, that's not what I mean.
While it's obviously a subjective statment, I have a number of things to back up the claim.
Primarily when you have people with over a decade of motorsport experience drive your car and tell you it's the best handling car they've ever driven (stock), that has to count for quite a bit.
When you have a F2000 race school instructor tell you that about the only "sedan" they could pace students in their F2000's in would be the S2000, that has to count for even more.
And when you're beating Z06's (probably one of the top 5, or 3 that arguably would deserve the title) with drivers with 3+ times the experience than you have in AutoX with a Stock S2000... you know you're driving something special.
What other vehicle would you suggest is better handling out of the box?

Well I'm speaking about the S2000 as someone who drives it for sport. AutoX is also more about handling than any motorsport I know of.
The TT may be better for your average driver. Apparently the S2K is not an easy car to drive (though I seem to do a decent enough job with it). But I don't think the fact that it's setup like a race car and therefore your average person overdrives the thing, is a hit against how it handles.
The 360, as I understand it, is ass (considering). It's a gorgeous car, lots of HP, sounds like sex. But I've been told I'd be disappointed with it. (not that I wouldn't take one)
The Z06 is an impressive machine, and basically king of the track. This is why I say it's a top 5 or top 3 "Best handling" car. But obviously for different reasons. Apparently it's not very fun to drive around town in. I can only assume this has to do with it's size?! It's a pretty large vehicle and therefore doesn't put it in the "nimble" handling category.
The NSX is mid engine and apparently doesn't drive like a go-kart (haven't driven one) but one guy who has and who has also drive my S, said if he had his choice he'd prefer the S, it's more fun. Many seem to regard the NSX as the best sportscar in the world. I've yet to see one driven in anger though.
And yeah there is the Elise, which has production numbers even less than the S2K, and not available on this Continent (yet I hear). I haven't driven one and don't know anyone who has, so it could very well be a better handling car. Don't know much about it since there isn't much I could do to get one.
Anyhow I'd have put the Z06, New 911, and the NSX in the top 5 (as I understand) with the S2K. From there it's probably a bit of a fight and each car would probably shine more in one area or another, so then it comes down to what's important to you.
One thing I can tell you is the MR2 is not in that list.
Maybe in the early 90's, but not today. The 911 got better, the S2K exists, the Z06 exists, the 355 back then wasn't all that hot (apparently).
Basically.. when I get out of an F2000 and into the S2K, I don't notice THAT much of a difference. You're told about "no matter what you drive' when you get back into your car at the end of the day, it's going to feel like crap. I didn't feel that way about the S2K (and told the instructor next time I saw him, this is where I got his opinion on the car).
But yeah.. in the end it's opinion. Though I have no doubt the S2K has the evidence to back up it's position up there. When you start factoring things like fun, the fact it's a convertible and the hole (or lack thereof) in your pocket, it's got to be a hands-down winner.
