Actually its DAMN!

If you guys are really serious about this I must get 20 people! I will start a data base of peoples addresses paid status their order(radio or harness only) along with the stipulations that I had posted earlier.

We can start a new thread on this GB if you like!

Call me stupid, but I'm confused here - we are looking for controls to continue using the dash controls with new aftermarket head units. Why do we need remote control/IR eyes pointed at anything?

Does the stock unit use IR? Or is that the only way aftermarket stereos connect to factory dash/steering wheel controls?

The stock head senses different resistances on one lead coming from the dash controls and acts accordingly.

Several head units have wired remotes and it is technically possible to make a small circuit that reads the resistance from the dash and converts it to the appropriate signal for a specific head unit. A lot of work for each type of head unit, and only works with head units with a wired remote.

Many more head units in the upper range have IR control. Just like those learning remotes for home stereo stuff, the PAC unit is a programmable remote transmitter. It also has the circuit to sense resistances from a Honda dash (Pinky modifies it to be compatible with the S2000).

You have to teach it which commands (on your head units remote) correspond with which resistance signal from the dash switch. It remembers what you taught it.

From then on, whenever you operate a dash switch it sends the IR code you sent it and the head unit corresponds accordingly.

This way, one product can be sold to work with any number of head units.

It's not perfect BTW. With the original head unit I could stab the CH button and it would advance to the next track. With the PAC I have to press it more definitely, but not too long. You get used to it and it's not really that bad. Basically the PAC could use some de-bounce circuitry on the switch.

All said an done, I wouldn't be without it for a second.

The difference between the time it take to change channels....is a stab as fast as you can---->depress it fully and let go. Very subtle and sometimes if your to fast it wont realize it. I have only had a couple people "complain" about it. Though after they get used to it they think its just fine.

I actually got the SWI-3 from a local stereo place here. It works just as well as what pinky's mod sounds like, but he is right on the install. I installed it myself. First off, it doesn't come with a relay for the mute button to work (that's a couple bucks at radio shack, no biggie). And second, the module doesn't recognize the mode button because its resistance is too high so you have to put another resistor in the circuit for it to work. (Who uses the mode button anyway?) Other than that it works great. So it's really up to you whether or not to get the SWI-3. I don't like the whole idea of using the IR remote on my radio for the buttons to begin with. It just looks tacky having a little black eye sticking out of your radio. I searched and searched and that's the only implementation I could find. I have a Sony which has a wired remote and I'm trying to figure out how to replace the whole SWI-3 with an adapter that can plug directly into it. If anyone knows circuits and can help out, send me an email.

It's the only button I use. I have my two favorite FM stations pre-set on FM1 and FM2, my favorite AM pre-set and a CD in. I rotate among those four choices with the mode button. Someone on this board (or the old one) published the hint.

Barry in Wyoming.....where we only have two FM stations anyway.

that's crazy, I think I've used the mode button maybe once just to find out what it did.

Just so you know. The source buttons on IR remotes usually dont scroll like that. So that means if you went with the mod it would go TUNER(what ever you were on)/CD/CD Changer/Tuner/CD etc!
