Best Radar Detector?
V1 - period!
Loud as hell! Even with a amplified stereo system. Sometimes it's so loud, it is ear splitting.
V1 in independent tests is better than the Bel. Know of a guy who just got a Bel 980, then tested it side by side with his friends new Passport 8500. Psssport was picking up signals WAAAAAAY before the Bel was. He went right out and got the 8500! Believe that the V1 and 8500 are very comparable.
V1 beats the others (IMHO) due to two things:
1. Directional Indicators - very helpful when travelling at speed. It tells you WHERE to look! That way, you can slow down decisively.
2. Remote Mount - for stealth ability, it is great...also saves you having to reach up all the time to mute it or change options. More convenient for everyday driving too as it is closer to your steering wheel. Black body of the V1 is like a stealth fighter - very hard to see if hardwired into the car too - especially at night.
I also believe that the V1 is completely immune to VG-2 or "detector-detectors". Post this topic "Canadian C5'ers - tell me about your V1" on the 'C5 Tech Section' of http://www.corvetteforum.com The guys there are just as helpful to newcomers and non-c5 owners there as we are to newbies and 'nons' here. There are quite a few "North-North Americans"
that have V1's in Ontario Canada that can recount real life experience to you in the land where detectors are illegal.
Remember that NO detector gives complete peace of mind. Speed decisively. Also, be smart when speeding. Don't hang out in the left lane when the foot is down. Sit BEHIND other cars when approaching them and pull out ONLY when necessary to pass. Then come straight back into the same lane. If a cop can't get a clear line of sight on you, or if he can't see you speeding he can't book you.
With regards to the illegal detector in Canada, also be careful with the fact that there might be a dude in a Pinto with an el-cheapo detector right near you. The cop might pick up HIS non-VG2 detector, but due to your V1's increased sensitivity and the fact that you are driving a nice new shiny S2k, when the cop sees YOUR brake lights go on as well, guess who he's gonna be more inclined to pull over! He wouldn't even think about the Pinto. T(he VG2 detector-detector can't point out the car that has a detector - it's up to the cop to then use his discterion).
Well, you won't know that there was a monkey with an el-cheapo around, so you might hand over your V1 to the cop when he asks you to produce it. But, he may NOT have picked up your unit but may THINK you have the one he DID pick up! After all, how else would he know that you had a detector? See what I am getting at here? So, the moral is.,....be careful, and tighten up your handbrake cable - you're gonna be using it a lot!
Cops will often do that. It's one of the simplest tricks in the book. Drive around, put radar gun on...watch which car puts brake lights on. They do it again....about 3 more times and if the car they spot the first time is doing it every other time as well.......BINGO!!
There's their detector owner! All it then takles is a few 'insinuations' that "Please produce your detector, sir"....and remember, cops are good at this stuff if you please innocent, and you'll cough up!
Also, make sure you know your personal and car search laws in Canada. Although the cops may somehow know that you have a detector without ever visually seeing it, they may be legally be powerless to search your car. And, if they CAN search your car, maybe it is illegal for them to search your personal body including underwear (which is where you just placed your detector without them seeing you do it!). Or, if you have a 'BIG ENOUGH' girlfriend - there's somewhere *ELSE* to hide it.....eieeewwwwwwwww......
eek:
The moral is....if you know the search laws, you are careful about slowing down when there are cops around, then you should be able to get the benefit of the doubt. Another thing you could do is convert the switch for your passenger window lock (on the drivers door) into a switch that cuts the brake lights from working. This is for EXTREME counter measures and the cops would NEVER know you had this switch as it looks factory. Don't forget to leave it switched off though or later that night you might have a rear ender in your butt!
If the detector went off and you were speeding, and the threat is from behind, just quickly flip the switch and your brake lights are off even if your foot is mashing the pedal to the floor. This works especially well at night too!
V1 is well worth the money spent. It's only $100 bucks more than the Passport and is fully programmable. Plus you have all the other neat features on it as well. Have a look how many second hand V1's you see out there? Pretty much NONE. In fact, the only ones you'll probably ever see are stolen ones! That brngs me to another point...keep the V1 away from inquisitive eyes!
Hope this helps!
