My 2 cents. I researched this a lot about a year and a half ago. What I came up with was the Da'lan or Curt 1 1/4 hitch with a yakima king pin 2 bike carrier. I think the Da'lan and Curt hitches were the same and I don't even know which one I have. I think there were four bolts or so and two did latch into the bottom of the trunk, but there were others bolted to the frame. It's perfectly solid and I use it ALL the time. The yakima rack curves when it comes out of the hitch so it gives added clearence compared to a thule. I bought the lock kit with the rack and it's worked perfect.
I usally only carry one bike, but i have used it for two with zero issues.
I don't track the car so I wasen't worried about weight and you hardly notice the hitch when the rack isn't installed.
Other things to take note. My car is a 2001 with HKS exhaust and lowered 1.5 or so and everything fit perfect.
