The problem is all solved. The check valve was backwards. Thanks for all your advice!

Ah-Ha! I do believe in my "vacuum line" thread that I clearly showed a pic of that check valve and the way it is supposed to be orientated.

As for not catching that check valve thing in my post - I should tell you some of the dumb stuff I've done.

Did the previous owner use a different gas cap before swapping it back to stock for the sale to you?
