Based on this observation, I'm led to think that WOT is achieved when the throttle body hits this "stop", and any adjustment to remove cable slack will not force the throttle plate beyond WOT.

I understand the slack issue.

Note that when the throttle body hits the stop, it torques the shaft that goes through the throttle body that the butterfly is attached to. This will eventually elongate the hole, allowing air to enter. Not good for performance and a PITA to troubleshoot.

I had jerky acceleration and told my dealer, but they told me the slack was normal, and I'm not a wrench head I I knew it wasn't. I'll go fix it now. I believe I have almost an inch of play.

That play is there just in case a "Grandma" buys the car.

Question, if the cable has a play of roughly an inch, when you put the pedal to the metal, will the butterfly open fully?

*edit: I read pages 2 and 3 and found the answers to my own question.

I adjusted mine from almost an inch of play to half an inch, throttle is very responsive now and according to the helms manual, 1/2" is within recommended spec.

Thanks again This is a good thread.

Should I do this on a warmed up car or on a cold car?
I would think the cable would slack up some in a warm engine compartment.

What does Helm say?
