I think the "problem" with the windshield is a combination of the windshield being low and not having a lot of angle to it. Because of that, rocks and debris hit it fairly solidly causing damage rather than glancing off as it would do on a windshield that has a long low angle to it. Of course this is one of the things I really like about the S2k. Many newer convertibles have these long raked windshields that run way up so that they stop nearly over the drivers head....which takes a LOT of the open air feeling away. I much prefer the shorter more vertical windshield we have in our cars and will take that in trade for it being a little more susceptible to damage.
plus replacing our windshield is cheaper (smaller size). Compare $300 (S2000) against $650 (New Civic)

how about polycarbonate, i have no idea what the advantage is except for the weight saving, might not be as fragile as the s2000 windshield? saw it on bulletproof.
Lexan is tougher than glass, but it's not nearly as hard (not as resistant to pitting and scratching) On a street car, especially an S2K with it's relatively upright windshield, it would look sandblasted in very little time.
Like others have said, it's all about the windshield rake. Less rake -> bigger impact forces -> more pitting and chipping.

Honda made a trade-off. Going with less rake let them:
1) Move the firewall farther aft, which allowed them to move the engine farther aft (better CG)
2) Keep the weight of the car down (smaller windshield is lighter; glass is Heavy!)
3) Keep the passenger compartment short. I know this sux for us tall guys, but it's great for bending and torsional stiffness.

But there's a simple solution. Always drive in front of everyone else.

I also think the upright windshield is one of the many design cues from the original Honda S cars.

I've gone through 3 windshields in 6 months.
