ordered my Mr. Moly Break-In stuff just now.

I had changed my oil at 5215 and have put another 1500 miles or so on regular Chevron dino oil, but oh well.

No that you fledgling tribolgists are in the game, you are ready to get to the finer points of lubrication theory and practice: Here's tribomutation.

http://mechanik.tu-berlin.de/popov/publica...ns/Nanowear.pdf

Note that breakin not only involves asperties being ground/broken off, and redeposited, but there is actually chemical reation of hydrogen at the moelecular level into the steel itself.

This is also true (chemical impact on break-in and wear) for the weak acids formed when the car is started and moved a few feet, or when it is left idling for warm up rather than driven moderately.

Most of the miles were from couple of the long road trips we took, and therefore is mostly highway miles. Following is the test result of my break-in oil from Blackstone Labs. As you can see, the result is quite similar to yours, except for little additional wear. I have changed the oil with Castrol GTX 10W-30 and plan to keep it in there for 3,750 miles or 6 month, at which time I will consider using Mobil1, if the test result indicate end of break-in period. BTW, I've also changed the differential oil at the same time with Mobil1 75W-90. The factory oil from the differential was actually pretty clear, but there were quite a bit of fine metallic flakes that came out initially with the drain plug. For this reason alone, it was probably a good idea. Curiously, I didn't smell any strong unpleasant odor from the factory oil that was mentioned in many of the previous posts. Maybe I am not abusing the differental enough
That is very interesting how close the results were. I'll be changing mine out in five more months because I won't hit 3,750. It will be interesting to see how the results from the second change differ from the first. I changed my differential fluid out at the first oil change as well. Mine was grey, had lots of metallic particles, and smelled, but not too bad.

Bret, nice info to have. I also switched out my breakin oil at 4k. Used castrol GTX 10w-30 after that (I thought I heard something about it having higher Moly levels than some other dino oils). Wish I had thought of the Moly additive but oh well. My car burned about 1 quart every 3500 miles untill about 10k when it stopped. I now have 12k and no oil loss at all. Next change will be to Mobil 1 10w-30.

P.S. I switched my tranny and diff oil at 3.5k too (with Honda MTF and Castrol? 75w-90 which is what my dealer uses). Shifting improved a bit. Just switched again with Honda MTF and Amsoil 80w-90 synthetic.
