need some help tracking down a noise..
Hey guys..I was hoping by giving some info I could get some help with what I might need to check to get rid of this noise..
I am getting a humming/maybe slight metallic ringing..but sounds to me more like a humming(not intake whistle) at light throttle or very slightly at decel also. I have noticed it WAY more under VERY light acceleration seems to be more pronounced and noticeable if I hold a specific constant pressure on the gas pedal and also most pronounced between 2900-3500 rpms.. but as soon as I change the pressure I have on the gas or clutch in it goes away. To me it sounds like it is coming from the rear but when I put my ear down towards the center console I can also hear it pretty accurately there so Im not ruling out that it could be coming from the transmission and just projecting to where it sounds like its coming from the rear.. but this is where I feel I can get some input as to what could be causing it..It does it in EVERY gear most pronounced between 2900 and 3500rpms at all speeds..it also seems a bit more noticeable at interstate speeds..but it DOES NOT do it in neutral at all or if I have the clutch pushed in, also I could not reproduce the noise on a lift..so based on when it does and does not make the noise what could that possibly eliminate as far as bearings, diff, etc? ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Do you still have the original clutch? May be the infamous clutch buzz. The rpm is correct...but I don't recall that it was audible during acceleration...it was primarily deceleration where clutch buzz was noticeable.
Connect with your local s2ki group and have one of the shade tree mechanics or vintage owners take a listen.

definitely not clutch buzz..I did have that before I replaced my clutch..this is more of a humming..and it is under slight throttle..thanks for the suggestion though..I have let a few locals here it and they arent real sure..some think it could be the diff.. but it only makes noise under load..
good suggestion..I will have to try that..like I said..I was wandering if it was the diff as it sounds like its coming from the rear but when I just changed my fluid the fluid looked great and there was no shavings on the plug..plus when I listen near the console I can hear it there also..so not real sure exactly where it is coming from..its definitely worth a try thanks! I mean, it would possibly make sense as it only does it in gear not in neutral or with the clutch in..
I have a similar thing going on -- cant tell where this noise is, but is only on acceleration.... The can is BRAND NEW less than 900 miles. No smells, other sounds, etc, just that ringing/buzz sound.
Is this typical of our S?!!!
