what is the best transmission fluid for a s2k
#104
Let me give you my $0.02 on transmission oil.
Car has 8900 miles on it and the trans doesn't grind in the 1>2and 2>3 shift or any other gear.
It is extremely notchy in the 1>2 and 2>3 shift.
I originally changed the trans fluid at 4500 miles and put in the original Honda HG MTF. It was a bear with terrible 1>2 notchiness. I left it for 500 miles to see if there was any carrier solvent and if it that would evaporate off. Nothing happened! It was still terrible.
Switched to GMSMFM and at frist it felt really good, but after 500 miles it went bad and the 1>2 and 2>3 notchiness was back bigtime!
Switched to the new Honda MTF from Idemitsu - White cap, Green Label. Intially it felt horrible, but after 500 miles it got better. Maybe a carrier fluid evaporated off, I don't know! However, it is the best tranmission fluid I have used so far. I'm changing out all the fluids again at 10,000 miles and will replace with the new Honda MTF - white cap green label.
I was going to try Redline MT-90 as many of the folks on the board here praise the stuff!
Anyone else out there like the Redline MT-90?
My car is a MY05 so I'm not sure how the RL stuff will react with the Carbon Synchros. Perhaps RR can chime in.
BTW, does anybody have a picture of these carbon synchros. I'm curious if it is a web type material or if it is a coating on a brass synchro.
Just for the record, I use Mobil 1 Racing 0W-30 in the engine, LE-607 in the differential, and still looking for the ideal trans fluid.

I changed whatever was in my tranny (2003) for redline MTL, which is what THEY recommend for Honda. it does shift smoother and not as notchy. I'v used the MTL and/or MT-90 in other Honda's and Nissans and have had good results.

2 people at local auto parts stores have told me it would be a terrible idea run syncromesh in an s2k. its suposively much much too thick of an oil for the s2k tranny. even it it makes shifting feel great at the begining, over time it is probably not good for your car. I used to run it in my prelude, i loved it at first, but once the car was tracked it seemd to break down and not be nearly as smooth. The very knowledgeable manager at the parts department at my local honda dealership told me it was probably ok to run non-honda fluids in the rear dif, the cooling system, but there is no way she would recommend straying from honda mtf. Also, as many people already know honda has recently upgraded their mtf and it's better than ever. i just bought 2 quarts of it yesterday and am putting it in my tranny as soon as my spoon magnetic plugs come in the mail.

I've heard that the new Honda MTF formula is good.
I haven't run with it yet. For my MTF fluid, I've run with GM's Synchromesh Friction Modified... GMSMFM stuff... It has by far been the best over all so far. It doesn't appear to be any thicker than the previous stock stuff. What I like about it is that it feels smoother for cold shifting. I haven't noticed any big difference in the hot weather shifting between the Honda stuff and the GMSM stuff. Winter shifting feels better with the GMSM... therefore I doubt that the GM stuff is thicker than the Honda stuff. I do agree that the feel seems to suggest that the GMSM does break down faster as shifting is smoother for the first three months or so, but then feels like the Honda stuff at the same time.
So, perhaps the GMSM is better at first - esp for Winter driving, but eventually breaks down quicker and needs to be changed out after 6 months to maintain the feel.
I've primarily run with GMSMFM and like it. If I can find an oil that lasts longer I'll do it, but for the '04 on up, the GMSMFM seems to be the stuff. Try it. It can't hurt!
