Dean - where in Texas did you live?

I'm with you on computer stuff - I know just enough to worry myself sometimes. "I, Robot" was surprisingly good. I was big into the fantasy stuff (no fltsflshr, I mean like Tolkein) and sci fi (H G Wells) when I was in junior high and early high school - just kind of got burned out on it (though I really enjoyed the first few Star Wars movies), so I let my husband talk me into "I, Robot" because I like Will Smith (as an actor and a person). It's one that I could watch again.
Unfortunately, I lived in the no-man's land almost directly between Galveston and Houston. I hated every minute of it, but I wanted to be closer to Martha who was living on Tiki Island off Galveston at the time.

Yeah - pretty desolate - right around the NASA area, I believe. I'd probably like Galveston a lot more if I ever made it down there without gale force winds and a chill in the air. I really like the Florida beaches much better than the Galveston ones. My parents and grandmother live in Spring Hill, which is about 40 miles north of Tampa.

No, I was out near the booming metropolis of Manvel. It was not only desolate, but it was much like what I would imagine living in a Jerry Springer theme park would be.
I loved Corpus, SA, Austin, and the hill country, but except for Corpus, I never got to visit them much.

Man! That area is pretty desolate - couldn't you have found somewhere else within a reasonable proximity to live? I believe Martha would have been commuting 25 miles one way or the other if it'd been me!

Hill Country is my favorite - the river rafting, caves, San Antonio's riverwalk, Luckenbach (song written about this place - there are exactly 2 buildings in downtown Luckenbach but it's a bunch of fun to sit, drink beer, and people watch, and somebody's usually playing a guitar and singing in the crowd), the wineries, and the shops (little German historic town, Fredericksburg, where you can rent a historic cabin) - not to mention beautiful scenery and great food and music in Austin.

This is funny - there's a granary in "uptown" Luckenbach (there's a hand-painted sign declaring it such) and a farmhouse (I think this guy owns all of Luckenbach, to be honest) and the guy runs a little gift shop with tourist-type stuff. If he has to take a potty break, a lunch break, or a siesta, he just puts the sign out to come on in, look around, and if you want to buy something, leave the money in the jar at the counter I guess it works, he's done it this way for a long time - either that, or he has no inventory system!

Lainey - We have a good friend who is originally from Maine, I believe, but now lives north of Dallas. He's back up in the New England area frequently, though, as he designs and manufactures equipment for underwater exploration. I'd love to work with this guy. He's got a project going now with the Center for Marine Resources and the Department of Energy to create an underwater system that will monitor and send data and photos back up to the surface of natural gas hydrates on the sea floor in the Gulf of Mexico. What they're doing is monitoring the effects of the underwater environment on these mounds and the potential to harness the methane produced as a potential energy source. There are several different groups involved in creating different machines that will capture and transmit data - keep in mind, the capturing devices will be as far down as 4000 feet (since much of the activity occurs well below the sea floor). They're calling it a remote multisensor observatory, and it will all be installed remotely. Their project in the scheme of things is to create a 3D monitoring device (fiberoptics) for viewing of the movement of the sea floor.

Boy, I wish I were that smart!

I couldn't find a place with enough land to keep my dogs, and I didn't want to spend a fortune on housing since it wasn't supposed to be a permanent move.
What a small world. We went to Luckenbach last summer and also visited some of the ghost towns in that general area. There were quite a few musicians there having a great time playing music for all us tourists. I've forgotten the name, but we ate at one of the German restaurants in F-burg several times. I got to eat some pretty good knockwurst and listen to some very bad CW at the same time.

We were last in Luckenbach in the Spring of '03.

German restaurants have no business playing C&W. Everybody knows you go to a steak house to hear C&W (if you really want to hear C&W, that is.... ).
